My Professional Identity

I am Ojo Samuel Dunsin, a forward-thinking academic, educational technologist, and researcher who is passionate about exploring where adult education, emerging technologies, and social equity intersect. In my current role as an Assistant Lecturer at the University of Abuja, I’ve found my sweet spot: combining rigorous academic scholarship with hands-on technical expertise to design and manage transformative digital learning ecosystems.

What makes my professional journey unique is that I’ve developed dual competencies that work in beautiful synergy. On one hand, I’m a lecturer who loves imparting knowledge about entrepreneurship, instructional technology, and social studies. On the other, I’m a systems architect who has actually built and managed the technological infrastructure for large-scale distance education programs. This blend isn’t just theoretical for me, it’s how I live my professional life every day, creating vital bridges between educational theory and digital practice right here in Nigeria’s higher education landscape.

My Academic Journey and Evolution

My academic foundation is deeply rooted in Adult and Non-Formal Education, a discipline I chose because I believe in lifelong learning, community empowerment, and skill development outside traditional structures. I earned my Bachelor of Education with Second Class Upper Division honours from Adekunle Ajasin University, where I first discovered my passion for education that reaches people where they are.

That passion deepened during my Master’s degree at the prestigious University of Ibadan, where I researched how we can leverage technology to support at-risk young adults. My thesis title tells you exactly where my heart was: “Leveraging Technology for Enhancing Educational Support and Community Interventions for At-Risk Young Adults Raised in Single-Parent Households.”

Right now, I’m advancing my scholarly journey through a Ph.D. where my research took a truly meaningful turn. I’m investigating gender-based career dynamics and skill gaps that emerge as automation and AI transform women-dominated workplace sectors. This direction came from a powerful observation during my administrative work: I noticed that when we introduced virtual learning modes at our institution, female students showed a notable decline in self-motivation and enrollment compared to their male counterparts.

That insight became my mission: I want to harness targeted eLearning interventions as proactive tools to bridge emerging skill gaps. My goal is to empower adult learners, especially women with the functional competencies they need for career resilience and meaningful participation in our rapidly evolving digital economy.

My Professional Experience: Where Education Meets Technology

My career has been a progressive integration of education and technology. When I began at the University of Abuja in 2015 as an eTutor and Webmaster, I quickly realized I wasn’t just a facilitator, I was becoming the principal architect of our university’s distance learning digital backbone.

Here’s what I built and managed:

  • Learning Management System Leadership: I designed, deployed, and managed our MOODLE-based platform that serves thousands of distance learners. I created engaging virtual classrooms, configured assessment modules, and ensured our system was reliable 24/7 because I believe education should never be interrupted by technology failures.
  • University Digital Presence: I developed and managed our Centre’s official website and student portal using WordPress, always focusing on creating intuitive, user-friendly interfaces because I know how technology can either empower or frustrate learners.
  • Backend Systems Innovation: I oversaw critical administrative modules for student payments, applications, and data management, implementing digital workflows that reduced processing time by over 60%. For me, efficiency in administration means more time and energy for actual teaching and learning.
  • Support Systems Design: I implemented an osTicket-based helpdesk system that standardized support queries and reduced response time by 75%. I believe that behind every technical system should be a human-centered support structure.

This comprehensive role gave me unparalleled insight into Open, Distance, and eLearning (ODEL)—not just as concepts, but as lived experiences with real challenges and opportunities. In July 2023, a new call of Employment came from the National Open University of Nigeria to come and serve as an Academic which after departure necessitated University of Abuja going a step further to recognize my contributions with a counter-transition to a full-fledged academic role as a Lecturer, where I continue to teach with the same passion.

My Teaching Philosophy

As an educator, I adopt a facilitative, technology-enhanced approach. I believe in creating interactive learning environments where critical thinking and real-world application aren’t just encouraged, they’re essential. When you look at my course portfolio, you’ll see my commitment to developing practical, impactful skills:

  • The entrepreneurship courses I teach (GST201, ENT211, GST301, GST401) are about more than business—they’re about empowering students to create solutions.
  • The education technology courses (EDU301, PES204) are where I help future educators understand that technology should serve pedagogy, not the other way around.
  • The social foundations courses (SSE103, PES408, SSE408) connect education to community needs and national development.

My Research Contributions

My Technical Expertise

I bring extensive hands-on expertise across the entire educational technology stack:

  • Instructional Design: I’ve mastered the art and science of creating effective learning experiences—from needs analysis to assessment strategies that ensure real learning outcomes.
  • Authoring Tools: I work with industry-leading tools like Articulate 360, Adobe Captivate, and Camtasia to create polished, engaging educational content because I know that quality materials make quality learning.
  • Systems Management: I’m equally comfortable with MOODLE, Blackboard, WordPress, Drupal, and Joomla—this versatility allows me to choose the right tool for each educational challenge.
  • Media Production: I transform complex concepts into accessible visual narratives because I’ve seen how the right video or graphic can make understanding click for students.
  • Data Management: From SPSS for research to backend database management, I ensure data integrity because I believe good decisions come from good data.

My Leadership and Service

I actively contribute to institutional governance because I believe we all shape the environments where we work:

  • As Examination Officer, I oversee assessment integrity for thousands of distance learners.
  • On the Examination Board, I contribute to policy that upholds academic standards.
  • Through the MOU Review Committee, I help shape strategic international partnerships.
  • On the Disciplinary Committee, I work to uphold our institutional ethics and values.

The 2024 University of Abuja Staff Meritorious Award I received wasn’t just recognition—it was affirmation that service excellence matters.

My Knowledge Sharing

I’ve been privileged to facilitate capacity-building workshops for several Nigerian universities, equipping faculty with cutting-edge digital pedagogy skills. When I present at conferences like the ACDE International Conference or the ODeLAN/NOUN Conference, I’m not just sharing knowledge—I’m participating in critical dialogues about Africa’s educational future.

My Vision and Commitment

What drives me is the conviction that technological advancement must not create or exacerbate inequalities. I envision an educational paradigm where eLearning becomes a strategic tool for social equity—where we anticipate skill disruptions and design accessible pathways to address them. My work embodies what I call “future-proofing education”—preparing learners not just for today’s jobs, but for tomorrow’s uncharted professional landscapes. I stand at the intersection of education, technology, and gender studies because I believe this is where we can make the most meaningful impact. I represent a new generation of African academics who are equally comfortable with scholarly research, classroom teaching, and digital system architecture. This combination positions me to contribute meaningfully to educational transformation—not just in Nigeria, but across our continent.
